Advice from Ozarks Teen Challenge: Truancy
Parenting teens can be complicated. Sometimes it can be difficult to know how and when to discuss issues that you’ve noticed with your teen in a constructive and productive manner. A well-intentioned talk about continually missing school may turn into a screaming match at the drop of a hat.
At Ozarks Teen Challenge, we work with teens on a daily basis. We understand how challenging it can be sometimes to help your teen son through an issue as a parent. Communication is key in these types of situations, and handling the problem early can prevent a situation from becoming worse. Our Ozarks Teen Challenge staff has a few pieces of advice on how to discuss your teenager’s truancy in a beneficial and productive manner.
What is Truancy?
Truancy is an unexcused absence from school. These absences are voluntary and not caused by illness or other issues that are grounds for excused absences by the school. Different states have different rules regarding when a child should attend school. While truancy is not a law-breaking offense, it is considered a status offense. Repeatedly missing school can have significant negative consequences for a teen. In many states, missing more than 10 days of school will require the teen to repeat the entire academic year.
Talking to Your Son About Truancy
If your teen son has had several unexcused absences from school, there is almost definitely an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. This can be a tricky road to navigate as a parent. The most important thing to remember when talking to your son about his truancy is that you are trying to understand, not accuse. Be calm and truly listen to what your child is saying. If your son feels safe, he will eventually open up about the other issues. Then you can take steps together to overcoming the problem and getting his education back on track.
